Should I Join A Group Fitness Program Or Not?

25 Aug

Group fitness classes are more popular than ever. Here are the pros and cons of this type of workout:

Pros:

  • People who sweat together stay together. Group fitness classes bring an element of camaraderie and competition that helps people stick to their fitness program.
  • Generally, you’ll work harder that you would on your own.
  • You’ll end up doing exercises that you might not have thought.
  • You’ll get good full body exercises that will work not only your muscles but also your cardiovascular system.

Cons:

  • The exercises will be more general and not custom to your needs.
  • The instructor may not be able to correct your form during each exercise.
  • You might perform exercises that may actually cause harm (especially if you have any previous injuries).
  • You probably won’t have someone track your results and give you nutritional guidance as you would with a personal trainer

Hey there:) I teach group fitness Body Attack by Les Mills. It is Amazing! As an instructor I do correct people if they are performing wrong when I notice. We are repetitive enough that we start with a slow motion preview of the move and then move up in levels of intensity over the course of three or four 1-2 minute rounds. So technique is huge and taught at least in my class. Also as far as the customization, there are hundreds of moves. There is an alternate option for every move we do. Voila. Customized! I would love to help someone track goals or find nutritional guidance even though it isn’t part of the class, there are billions of options out there in this day and age.

Hi. Thank you for reading the Finish Fit® Blog. Just like Les Mills, Finish Fit Boot Camp® instructors modify client workouts and correct movements during class and no two Finish Fit Boot Camp® classes are ever the same. We even provide a generalized nutrition plan for each boot camp member. However, I would not consider this custom. Custom is what we do for Finish Fit Personal Training® clients. Let me explain! Prior to training, we perform a thorough assessment that includes an FMS test to determine muscular imbalances in the client’s kinetic chain, a Bruce Protocal/YMCA 3-min step VO2max test to determine cardiovascular endurance; we further perform a muscular strength and endurance test (i.e. pushups to failure), and finally we do 80% MAX rep tests for squats, dead lifts, the bench press, and pullups. After a DEXA scan and an hour consultation we determine the client’s goals. Then based on all the information we collect we create a 6-week periodized program. We further program for 2 other 6-week microcycles and the bigger macrocycle (entire year). We repeat all the test results at the end of 6 weeks to determine progress and we make adjustments in the next microcycle as needed. Finally, Finish Fit® Certified Nutritionists design custom meal plans using the Finish Fit® Nutrition App with the proper macronutrients to ensure that we meet the dietetic needs of our clients (i.e. muscle mass gain, fat loss, etc.).
